What Size Dumpster Do I Need for a Roof Replacement?

For most single-layer asphalt roofs on an average Brazos Valley home, a 20 yard dumpster is the right call. Small roofs and low-slope work often fit a 10 yard. Big roofs, thick architectural shingles, and two-layer tear-offs usually need a 30 yard or a second pull.

Here is the part most size guides skip. Roofing debris runs out of weight long before it runs out of room. So the real question is not how much space your shingles take. It is how many pounds they weigh.

This guide walks you through the math a roofer would use. You will learn how to measure a roof in squares, what each square weighs once it comes off, and which container actually fits that load without tipping into overage.

Start here, then check the weight math below. The chart assumes one layer of asphalt shingles and no deck repair.

Every one of those rows can shift. Wet shingles, a steep pitch, or new decking all add weight. Treat the chart as a starting point and the weight math as the real answer.

How Big Is Your Roof, Really?

Almost every sizing mistake starts here. People use the size of the house instead of the size of the roof. Those are two different numbers.

What a Roofing Square Is

Roofers measure in squares. One square covers 100 square feet of roof, which is a patch 10 feet by 10 feet. That makes a 2,000 square foot roof a 20 square job.

Your roofer already knows this number, so ask for it before you book anything else. It is the single most useful fact you can bring to a dumpster call.

Your House Size Is Not Your Roof Size

A roof slopes. That slope makes the roof surface larger than the floor plan under it, and the steeper the pitch, the bigger the gap gets.

The fix is a pitch multiplier. Take the footprint of the house, then multiply.

  • A 6/12 pitch adds about 12 percent
  • A 9/12 pitch adds about 25 percent
  • A 12/12 pitch adds about 41 percent

So a 2,000 square foot footprint on a common 6/12 roof is not 20 squares. It is closer to 22 and a half. That gap is small on paper. It is about 1,000 pounds of shingles once you load it.

Counting Squares From Bundles

No measurement? Count bundles instead. Three bundles of shingles cover one square, and one bundle covers about 33 square feet.

If your roofer ordered 66 bundles, you have a 22 square roof. Simple as that.

What a Tear-Off Actually Weighs

This is where the size decision really gets made. Shingles are dense. A load that looks half empty can already be over the limit.

Sources disagree on exact numbers, so plan with the high end. It is cheaper to have room left over than to pay for extra tons.

Notice the jump from 3-tab to architectural. Same roof, same square count, and nearly double the weight. That one detail moves plenty of jobs up a full size.

The Second Layer Problem

Texas homes often carry two layers of shingles. The second one hides under the first, so nobody sees it until the tear-off starts.

A second layer roughly doubles the weight of the tear-off. It does not add a little bit on top. It adds another whole roof.

Check before you book. Look at a cut edge along the eave, peek into the attic, or just ask your roofer what he found. When you are not sure, size up, because a slightly big box still costs less than an overage ticket.

A Worked Example

Say you have a 2,000 square foot roof with architectural shingles and one layer.

  1. 2,000 square feet divided by 100 gives you 20 squares
  2. 20 squares times 400 lbs per square is 8,000 lbs
  3. One layer, so the number stands
  4. 8,000 lbs divided by 2,000 is 4 tons

Four tons of shingles. That fits inside a 30 yard dumpster, which includes 3 to 4 tons. Put the same roof in a 20 yard and you are over the included weight, even though the box is only about half full.

Now swap in 3-tab shingles at 250 lbs per square. The same roof drops to 2.5 tons, which lands right inside the 20 yard allowance. One material change, one size change.

Why Roofing Is a Weight Problem, Not a Space Problem

Most debris fills the box first. Furniture, cardboard, and drywall all run out of room long before they run out of pounds. Roofing flips that.

Here is the trap that catches people. A roofing load looks half empty at pickup, so the homeowner assumes he bought too much box. He did not. He bought the right box and hit the ceiling that actually governs the job.

A bigger container does not buy you much more weight, either. Tonnage allowances do rise with size, but they rise slowly, because a loaded truck still has to obey legal road limits.

Compare two of ours. The 30 yard holds about twelve pickup loads and includes 3 to 4 tons, while the 20 yard holds about eight and includes 2 to 3 tons.

Space nearly doubles. Weight barely moves.

None of this is guesswork on our end, either. Every load crosses a certified scale at the landfill, and the ticket from that scale is what any weight past your allowance gets billed against.

That is why we sometimes talk people out of the big box. When your load is heavy and small, a smaller container with the right tonnage beats a huge one you can never legally fill.

What Adds Weight People Forget

Run through this list before you lock in a size:

  • Extra layers. Each one roughly doubles the shingle weight.
  • Rain. Soaked shingles can run 15 to 20 percent heavier.
  • Age. Old, weathered layers hold grit and moisture, so add another 10 to 15 percent.
  • Nails and underlayment. Small on their own, real once you total the roof.
  • New decking. Plywood sheathing runs about 140 lbs per square. Re-deck a 20 square roof and you just added 1.4 tons.

Decking is the one that surprises people most. It never shows up in a shingle calculator, and it can push a comfortable load straight into overage.

Protecting the Driveway

A loaded roofing container is heavy in a small footprint. On a hot Texas afternoon, asphalt gets soft, and soft asphalt marks easily.

Lay plywood under the wheels and the rails. Three-quarter inch sheets work well, and full coverage under the box works better than a couple of scraps. Concrete handles the load better than asphalt, though it can still scuff.

Where Roofing Debris Goes Around Here

Shingles count as construction and demolition debris in Texas. They cannot go in your household cart, and most curbside services will not take them at any volume.

Texas routes this material to permitted landfills. The state’s environmental agency, the TCEQ, runs two classes that accept it: Type I and Type IV landfills. Type IV sites are built specifically for brush and construction debris.

There is a recycling angle too. Old shingles can be ground and blended back into road pavement, and TxDOT allows recycled shingles in asphalt mixes. The nearest commercial operation doing that is a long haul from the Brazos Valley, so most local tear-offs still go to a landfill. It is worth knowing the pathway exists.

One more wrinkle if you are out in Washington County. The City of Brenham runs a collection station on Old Chappell Hill Road, and it is set up for household loads rather than contractor tear-offs. A homeowner hauling a few bundles is a different situation than a roofing crew stripping a whole house. Call the city first and confirm what they will accept and what it costs, because those terms change.

For a full tear-off, a roll-off on site is almost always the simpler path. You load as the roofers work, and the whole roof leaves in one pull.

Hail Season and Booking Ahead

Central Texas hail runs hardest from March through June, and April and May are the peak. Hail around an inch or bigger is usually what turns a repair into a full replacement.

That timing matters for you. When a storm crosses Brazos or Washington County, every roofer in the area books up in the same week, and dumpsters go out the door just as fast.
